Jobs

What is a Job?

A job represents a request for lab work and is used to organize related samples and testing in LabHQ. A job is linked to a client and can contain one or more samples that are being processed as part of the same piece of work.

Jobs provide the overall record for tracking the work through the lab workflow. Information such as the client, key dates, samples, attachments and certificates can be managed as part of the job.

How Jobs Are Structured

Jobs sit at the top of the main testing structure in LabHQ:

Jobs → Samples → Tests

A job can contain one or more samples. Each sample can then contain one or more tests.

Information that relates to the overall piece of work is recorded against the job, while information specific to an individual sample or test is recorded at the relevant level.

For example, a job may be created for a batch of samples received from the same client, with each sample containing its own testing requirements.

Information Recorded Against the Job

A job brings together the information needed to manage and track a piece of lab work.

Depending on your organization's configuration, this can include:

  • Job ID - a unique identifier for the job.
  • Client - the client the work is being carried out for.
  • Job details - information recorded when the job is submitted, such as batch information.
  • Custom fields - additional information your organization has configured to record against jobs.
  • Samples - all samples included as part of the job.
  • Attachments - files associated with the job.
  • Certificates - documents generated for the completed work.

The fields available may vary depending on how your organization has configured LabHQ.

Jobs & Samples

Every sample belongs to a job.

A job can contain a single sample or multiple related samples. Each sample is managed separately and can have its own product, testing requirements, results and status.

This allows you to use the job as the overall record for the work while still tracking the progress and results of each individual sample.

See Samples for more information about how samples are used in LabHQ.

Job Status & Workflow

A job provides an overall view of the progress of the samples it contains.

As samples move through the lab workflow, the job status updates to reflect the progress of the work.

You can open a job at any time to see its samples and review where they are in the workflow.

Individual samples within the same job may be at different stages of processing.

Working With Jobs

Depending on your permissions, you can use jobs to:

  • Submit new lab work
  • View and update job information
  • View samples included in the job
  • Follow progress of samples
  • Add and manage job attachments
  • Generate and manage certificates for completed work
